This barbecue pot pie with a cheese grits crusts feels like home for the Beattie family. The sweet and smoky pork topped with cheesy grits is a match that embodies the flavors of the Beattie Family Farm. This meal brings “comfort food” to an entirely new level. Shana Beattie, past president of the Nebraska Pork Producers Association and mother of Mekenzie and Mattison Beattie, founders of Sassy Sisters Swine shares her family recipe for this delicious Barbecue Pot Pie with Cheese Grits Crust.
“A pork shoulder roast, smoked or slow cooked, is an excellent choice for pulled pork. Many times, we fill our smoker with shoulder roasts that are dry rubbed and roasted low and slow. Then we use the pulled pork for this recipe, pork tacos or a good old-fashioned pulled pork sandwich. The options are endless, and extras are kept in the freezer for quick meal options,” Shana Beattie said.

Sassy Sisters Swine: Mekenzie and Mattison Beattie
A sister duo from Sumner, Nebraska, joined forces to form Sassy Sisters Swine, a direct-to-consumer pork business. Mekenzie Beattie, a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Mattison Beattie, a senior at Sumner Eddyville-Miller High School, are the sixth generation of Beatties to grow up working on Beattie Family Farms.
They were inspired to launch the business after they received many inquiries from individuals looking to purchase pork from their family farm. Their parents are Bart and Shana Beattie. Shana is a past president of the Nebraska Pork Producers Association Board of Directors.
As the sixth generation on their family’s diversified farm, the sisters have developed a passion for the legacy their family has built and what they do every day. One of the largest entities on the Beattie farm is hog production. The family runs a wean-to-finish hog farm. The young women have been actively involved on the hog farm since the day they were born.

“Helping with chores, taking care of pigs and learning about ‘all things pork’ is how we developed a passion for swine,” Mekenzie says. “Launching Sassy Sisters Swine was a great way to share our passion for pork with the community. The company has been delivering pork direct to consumers since August 2020.
“With the global pandemic, many people were starting to worry about the meat supply and where they could find fresh, safe meat,” Mekenzie says. “We wanted to capitalize on this opportunity, and we could not have asked for a better time to start our business.”
