The Indianapolis Colts will start rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson in Saturday's preseason opener at Buffalo, coach Shane Steichen announced Thursday. Richardson, the fourth overall pick in April's draft, has been working primarily with the starters over the past week and has shown glimpses of the raw talent that intrigued the team.
Matt Ryan has joined CBS as an analyst, though he’s not giving up on landing with another team as a quarterback. The four-time Pro Bowler and the 2016 NFL MVP joins CBS to serve as a studio and game analyst across multiple platforms for the upcoming season. He also wrote on his Twitter account that "this is not a retirement post.” The 37-year-old Ryan is coming off a disappointing season with the Indianapolis Colts, who acquired him in a trade last year after he spent 14 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Now, he's ready to give broadcasting a try.
Aaron Rodgers nearly upended the NFL schedule two years ago when he told some within the Green Bay Packers organization that he didn't want to return to the team. For the sake and sanity of those in the league's scheduling department, cooler heads prevailed. Rodgers was on the move during this offseason with his trade to the New York Jets, but it was planned well enough in advance that the league and its network partners could get in their requests. The Jets will make six prime-time appearances and have four games in the Sunday afternoon late window.
The Indianapolis Colts want other NFL teams to know they consider contacting former quarterback Andrew Luck to be tampering. Team owner Jim Irsay made that clear late Sunday night in a Twitter post. Luck abruptly retired in August 2019 at age 29 with three years left on his contract. He's shown no indication he wants to return and appears to have slimmed down significantly from his listed playing weight of 240 pounds.
Quarterbacks dominated the first part of the NFL draft. Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson were among the top four picks Thursday night, an expected result in a league where teams know finding a franchise QB is the quickest path to success. The Carolina Panthers selected Young, the slender and dynamic Alabama quarterback, with the No. 1 pick, seven weeks after making a blockbuster trade with Chicago to move up to get their choice of potential franchise players.
Tyson Bagent played most of his college career in relative obscurity at Division II Shepherd College in West Virginia. Then the New York Jets showed up during his sophomore season. Suddenly, the son of an international arm-wrestling champion was turning heads, winning awards and drawing attention from larger programs — even NFL scouts. Now Bagent, Caleb Murphy of Ferris State and Andrei Iosivas of Princeton are all trying to break out of their small school roots to prove they should be selected on draft weekend.
Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce was one of 25 current and former players who participated last week in the league’s Broadcasting and Media Workshop, which used to be known as the Broadcast Bootcamp. This was the second year the workshop was held at the NFL Media headquarters, which opened in 2021 and is a 30-yard pass from SoFi Stadium.
Mark Evans II feels honored to be at this week’s NFL’s annual scouting combine. The former Arkansas-Pine Bluff offensive lineman just believes more players from historically Black colleges and universities should be in Indianapolis.
