A Hawaii surfer known for shooting awe-inspiring photos and videos from the inside of massive, curling waves has died after a surfing accident in Indonesia. Mikala Jones was 44. His father Dr. John Jones, a Honolulu dentist, says Jones had gone out Sunday morning during a trip to the Mentawai Islands off the western coast of Sumatra when his surfboard fin cut his femoral artery. The femoral artery is a large blood vessel in the thigh that delivers blood to lower limbs. Jones' Instagram account shows images of waves curling around him from above while he crouches on his board with a sunset or sunrise visible in the distance.

One of the world's most prestigious and storied surfing contests is expected to be held Sunday in Hawaii for the first time in seven years. And this year female surfers will be competing alongside the men for the first time in the 39-year history of The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, actress Ariana Ron Pedrique was busy filming “Ayar” in various parts of Los Angeles where she lives. “‘Ayar’ is a feature film about a Latina who returns home after an unsuccessful showbiz career in Vegas to reunite with her 5-year-old daughter,” she said. “Playing Ayar was special to me (and) peeling back all the layers of such an interesting and fully dimensional character was fascinating. She’s a strong-willed woman who is willing to face all her demons (and) hoping to amend the relationship with her daughter. This is also a story about survival, regret, forgiveness and rebirth.” “Ayar” will release in theaters on Nov. 26.

Otoja Abit wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film “A New York Christmas Wedding,” which is currently available on Netflix. The New York-based actor (“Stonewall,” “Black-ish,” “Harlem Knights”) said while he is grateful to be faring well during this pandemic, he was disappointed he couldn’t celebrate his movie at film festivals as originally planned. Still, he remains optimistic and looks forward to the day when it’s safe to travel again. “My dream trip would be to travel to England with the one I love for a Christmas holiday,” said Abit, 35. “(We would) see a show on the West End, followed by a quaint dinner at a local pub.”

When I'm in Portland, I'm usually hopping around between points in or near the city center. Trips are often short enough that I can comfortably walk. But when it's raining-- which, in Portland, is quite a bit of the time-- I'm happy to hop on the light rail or a bus for even a few blocks.
