SEATTLE — In one Seattle-based conversation, people might be talking about a certain West Coast conference's 108-year history and its imminent demise. In another one, people might be discussing a certain Midwest conference and how its recent acquisitions will shape college football for decades to come. But in between those chats about the past and future should be one involving these ...

PITTSBURGH — What a shame to see the conference formerly known as the Pac-12 (and Pac-10, and Pac-8, and Pacific Coast Conference) withering away on life support on account of college football's latest money-fueled implosion. It's not even a six Pac anymore. It's the Pac-4. Obituaries roll in by the day, commemorating the 108-year-old league that gave us too many sports luminaries to count, ...

DALLAS — For how many weeks (or perhaps it was months) were SMU fans led to believe they were on their way to the big time in the form of the Pac-12? Well, Bill Walton’s beloved “conference of champions” is now a conference of yesteryear, so excuse me for not buying in immediately to the notion that SMU is bound for the ACC. The latest reports have indicated the Mustangs are even willing to ...

The Midland men's soccer team was picked to finish third by the conference coaches in the annual preseason poll released Thursday.

The latest round of conference realignment, which came to a boil with last week's implosion of the Pac-12, will not impact the 2023 Holiday Bowl. This year's game will pair Pac-12 and ACC teams Dec. 27 at Petco Park as scheduled. Next year? That's another matter. "Next year, yes, there are going to be changes," said Mark Neville, CEO of Sports San Diego, which produces the Holiday Bowl. "With ...

There was a simple logic to Georgia Tech hiring Paul Johnson as football coach. He would help the Yellow Jackets beat opponents who had more player talent, same as he did at Navy. It worked, for the most part. Johnson’s Jackets won four division titles, one ACC championship and an Orange Bowl. He won three times at Sanford Stadium, including a victory over Kirby Smart. The Jackets won at a ...

Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the U.S. Open. That means he will have missed all four Grand Slam tournaments this year. He reached his first major final at Wimbledon in 2022 and the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open. But the 28-year-old from Australia has participated in just one official match all of this season — a loss in June in Stuttgart, Germany. Soon after that he withdrew from Wimbledon because of an injured wrist. He also missed the Australian Open in January and the French Open in May. The U.S. Open begins on Aug. 28 in New York. Jan-Lennard Struff also pulled out on Thursday.

Jon Rahm is the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup playoffs, which begin Thursday at the St. Jude Championship. That's not a good omen based on recent history. Only one player in the last 13 years has started the PGA Tour's postseason as the No. 1 seed and gone on to win the FedEx Cup. That was Jordan Spieth in 2015. Spieth had a big lead that year. Rahm does not. He's narrowly ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. This is the first of three playoff events. Only the top 50 from the 70-man field advance to next week.

There have been 21 different winners in the last 22 major championships in women's golf. So the field is wide open for the final major of 2023 even if two players stand out. Celine Boutier and Rose Zhang are dominating the conversation heading into the Women's British Open starting Thursday at Walton Heath in southern England. Boutier is the hottest player around after following up her first major title at the Evian Championship by winning the Scottish Open last week. Zhang is a 20-year-old star widely regarded as the next big thing in women's golf and has top-10 finishes in all three majors as a pro.

ASHBURN, Va. — Ron Rivera said Wednesday he spoke to Eric Bieniemy about his comments that some Washington Commanders players expressed concern over the new offensive coordinator’s coaching style, apologizing for the remarks that put him in hot water around the NFL.

This we know: Legalized sports betting is growing. College coaches and administrators know it, as well. They’re concerned about the potential problems it means for student-athletes. Nick Saban is among those coaches. So the Alabama coach got an idea. Who would be the best person to talk to his Crimson Tide football team about the effects of gambling? His answer: Pete Rose. The all-time hits ...

Video review for double bounces and certain other rulings will be making its Grand Slam tennis debut when main-draw competition begins at the U.S. Open later this month. Players in singles, doubles and mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows will get three challenges per set for things such as whether a ball touches a player's body, a player touches the net or a player was hindered by noise made while she or he was attempting a shot. The chair umpire will review a replay on the screen and decide whether a call should be changed. The system will be available on five of 17 competition courts during the two-week tournament in New York.
